Abstract
The mortality and morbidity associated with the surgery of acoustic neuroma
(schwannoma) are intimately related to the tumor size. Therefore, early detection of
acoustic neuroma greatly influences the postoperative result. The unsatisfactory
resolution of the conventional 2-dimensional Fourier transformation spin-echo (2 DFT
spin echo) technique hinders early detection and identification of the nerve tumors.
However, the 3-dimensional Fourier transformation constructive interference in steady
state (3 DFT CISS) and 3-dimensional magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (3D
MP-RAGE) allow 3 dimensional reconstruction and identification of small tumors below
1 mm in size. The authors attempted to determine whether CISS and MP-RAGE
techniques are appropriate methods for detection of acoustic neuroma, by imaging the
internal acoustic meatus and tumor in two acoustic neuroma patients. The authors
believe that complementary utilization of the two techniques will enabie early detection
of acoustic neuroma and improve treatment outcome.
